Old Shuckers
The Eastern Oyster, that all oyster farmers harvest on the east end of Long Island, have amazingly strong shells that last thousands of years. Some of the oldest archaeological evidence of ‘people’ in the New York area are oyster shells. They have been found in the form of middens, which are piles of shucked oyster shells, around the New York Area. The oldest midden of Crassostrea Virginica (the Eastern Oyster) was carbon dated 5900 BC in Dobbs Ferry NY.
